Early years at Camp Leakey
I was born in Indonesia and spent my first years at Camp Leakey, the research station established by my parents in what is now Tanjung Puting National Park.
I moved back to Kalimantan
In my early twenties I moved back to Kalimantan and spent several years volunteering in and around Camp Leakey. The work involved camps, supplies, transportation, coordinating volunteers, visitors, field support, cleaning cages, enrichment programs, and bringing orangutans into the forest for the day. I have written about some of that field work, including an illegal gold mining operation farther up the Sekonyer River.
I worked on wildlife documentaries and television
I worked on wildlife documentaries in Kalimantan, including productions for Animal Planet and National Geographic. In 2017 I returned as location manager for Animal Planet’s Raised Human, when we searched for Princess, an orangutan I had known since childhood. I also hosted one episode of a syndicated show and worked on productions as a location manager and translator.
I started building for nonprofits
For more than fifteen years I have built websites, fundraising systems and software for nonprofit organizations. I also served on the board of Orangutan Foundation International Canada and built WordPress products for charities.
I started Orangutan Conservation Initiative
I started Orangutan Conservation Initiative as an independent project about orangutans and the conservation work around them in Indonesia. I have written more about why I built OCI and what I want the project to become.
